Open Windows
Why doesn’t Microsoft do an open-source project - and call it Open Windows? It makes sense to me on too many levels to quickly blog about but here are the bullet points:
1. Can’t beat ‘em? Join ‘em! Imagine what they could do in open source if they just tried a little and threw a bit of money at it.
2. Going Green. By continuing to utilize hardware that would otherwise be outdated, it keeps it from the trash heap. To finally be able to use electronics components util there is a physical failure instead of obsolescense due to code bloat would save an incredible amount of waste. 286 anyone?
3. Recapture “The Brand” - Of all the casual, daily home users out there, it’s easy to assume that most are using an older machine running 95/Me/2000/XP and most of those people will never see or want to see the likes of Vista. They could, however, see vast benefits of leaner code running on their current machine. Better still to them, they don’t need to fear the unknown. They feel happy with Windows and have no intention of test driving any new OS.
4. More with Less - Ubuntu users quietly laugh and titter at what they can do with an OS that is easy download, install and administer – for free. So laughable that I ran this OS off of the live CD - and no physical hard drive for quite a long time. To actually see what open source software can do on a machine that is Widows 95/Me/2000/XP is quite shocking.
…more later - need to run…again.
